How to Hear God’s Truth Over the Lies of the Past

Our past has a way of whispering lies, “You’re not enough,” “You’ll never change,” “Your story defines you.” Left unchecked, those lies shape how we see ourselves and the choices we make.

But God’s Word speaks a different truth — one rooted in freedom. We don’t have to accept the enemy’s narrative. Ephesians 1:19–20 reminds us that the very power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in us. That means we don’t have to sit back and absorb every attack.

Here’s how we can begin replacing the lies of the past with the unshakable truth of God’s Word.

1. Identify the Lies You’ve Believed
Healing begins with awareness. What words, experiences, or moments from your past still echo in your mind? Write them down. Bringing them into the light disarms their power.

2. Replace Lies with God’s Word
Scripture is the strongest weapon against lies. When the past says “You’re not enough,” God says, “You are fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). When the past says “You’ll never overcome,” God says, “You are more than a conqueror through Christ” (Romans 8:37).

3. Renew Your Mind Daily
Romans 12:2 reminds us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This isn’t a one-time act but a daily discipline. Through prayer, reflection, and scripture, you reset your thoughts toward truth.

The past doesn’t define you — Christ does. As you practice hearing God’s truth over the lies, you’ll discover a new clarity, confidence, and peace that empowers you to step fully into who He created you to be.
